Running a business is not only hard, but it’s also very tiring. It’s important that you eat the correct diet to ensure that you don’t get fatigued, depressed or make costly mistakes. Our short list below lists some of the best brain food you can get, ensuring that you eat the correct things for your body. Although we can happily eat fast food and junk food all day we won’t be properly resting ourselves and we’ll never feel 100%. Here are some of the best brain foods that you can eat and why you should start throwing them into your diet.
Brain Food One: Whole Grain
Our bodies need energy to survive. We also need energy to work and at the end of the day you can often feel tired with little energy left. Whole grain foods provide you this energy but as a slow release, over a long period of time. This means you won’t get the instant boost you would from a caffeine filled coffee, but you will be able to complete tasks over longer periods of time, without feeling fatigued.
Brain Food Two: Fish Oil
No, you don’t have to go and eat fish oil specifically. It doesn’t matter how you get your omega-3 but oily fish is one of the best sources available aside from specific nuts and seeds. By eating more fish you will obtain essential fatty acids which your body cannot naturally produce. Evidence even suggests that avoid fish can lead to a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s and memory loss. That makes fish a real brain food.
Brain Food Three: Dark Leafy Greens
Kale, spinach and broccoli are all great sources of vitamin E. Broccoli also contains vitamin K and folic acid, both of which help to improve your memory. Just one cup of raw spinach has 15% of your daily amount of vitamin E, with very few calories, meaning it can easily be thrown into your diet on things such as sandwiches. Studies have also suggested that a lack of folic acid can lead to depression, so by eating plenty of leafy greens (most broccoli) you’ll stay happy, energetic, and ready for work.
Brain Food Four: Dark Chocolate
Not all brain food has to be ‘healthy’. Studies have shown that Cocoa can improve the blood flow to your brain. It’s also loaded with nutrients which can, rather ironically, reduce the risk of heart disease and improve health by providing antioxidants. This brain food also contains flavonols which can protect the skin against sun-induced damage and the best thing about it? It’s chocolate! No more feeling guilty when you eat that chocolate bar at work.
Brain Food Five: Avocado
Avocados are often referred to as very fatty, and while that is true they are also extremely healthy. The fats are called unsaturated fats, which are used in cell membranes. The fatty acids provided by avocadoes works to protect your brains nerve cells and improves the muscle strength. Unsaturated fats have also been proven to lower your blood pressure and help keep your blood flow strong and healthy around your body, ensuring that your brain can function for the whole time you are at work.
Brain Food Six: Blueberries
Of all the foods on this list, blueberries are the ones most deserving of the title ‘brain food’. They don’t just improve your memory but they can even reverse memory loss. It can also help you improve your balance and co-ordination and when tested on in rats, it helped them to learn faster and improve their short-term memory. It’s not too hard to throw a handful of blueberries into your cereal or porridge, or just eat them at lunch, and your brain will love you for it.
Brain Food Seven: Sage
Sage does not really contribute to your RDA of anything due to always being consumed in small amounts, but it does offer lots of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which are essential to your good health. It will help your brain cells live longer, protecting them from free radicals, reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s and lowering your cholesterol. Sprinkle some sage onto your meals and your work is bound to improve.
Brain Food Eight: Nuts and Seeds
If you aren’t a fan of the leafy greens we previously discussed then you can get your vitamin E from an alternative source: nuts and seeds. Nuts and seeds are a great source of zinc which is vital to help you improve your memory and thinking skills. Nuts are also high in energy, protein and packed with antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. Nuts are also very easy to carry, have a long shelf life and can easily be eaten throughout the day. If you are only going to add one of these foods to your diet, we recommend you go nuts.
