Social Media Monthly Users
How many people regularly use your favourite social media platform? The numbers are readily available all over the internet, but numbers are boring. Here at Piccana we love to work with data and make it exciting. With July being the month that the New Horizons space probe reached its closest approach to the dwarf planet Pluto why not continue on that space theme? That’s why we decided to create a social system (it’s like a solar system). We took the amount of social media monthly users for the 10 biggest networks and created a to scale solar system, where the distance from the star is the amount of monthly users. Due to the massive distance between the first and last planet we had to create two images. The first image is the inner solar system (or social system) and the second is the outer. Unfortunately due having almost the same usage we had to merge Twitter and Instagram into one planet. Twinstergram? On that note, here’s the social system. Click on the images for the full size.

What does this mean?
Aside from the obvious joke about life on other planets, the main point of this is to show just how popular social media has become. The amount of social media monthly users for even the smaller networks is greater than the population of some countries. Is this success due to it being so readily available across all devices? Is it because it’s free to use? Whatever the reason for the popularity of social media we can all agree that it makes a pretty realistic solar system. We estimate that their are over 70 billion trillion stars in the universe and I have no doubt that most of these stars will have planets. This means that, thanks to probability, a solar system with planets spaced at these distances could actually exist.
